Critical Explorations: Exchanging Looks - The World and Ourselves Posited in Images - A Discussion and Studio Work

Looking at our paintings or other visual works for a second or third time in relation to each other, with other people, talking about them outside of our studio, and then examining through making another work how we might remake their theme or revise the relationships of their elements is the focus of this studio seminar.  It is a class for those who have mastered the basics of their practice—or seek to do so—through discussion and art practice.

Each participant should bring three to six works.  We will begin each session by discussing the dialogues, thoughts, and emotions that occur in response to the works.  Also, each person should bring in materials to make works in whatever medium they wish to work. The second half of the class will allow each person time to make a work concentrating on or expanding on the theme and focus of one of their works. We will then discuss these briefly. 

There will be a series of three classes a month apart.  Each class can be taken separately. If people choose to attend multiple classes as a series it will provide an opportunity to see the works develop.

An artist, writer, and lecturer based in Philadelphia, has been on the graduate faculties of the University of the Arts and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for over twenty years. He has written numerous pieces over the last twenty-six years for The Journal of Art, Artnews, Art in America, American Crafts, The New Art Examiner, Sculpture, Title Magazine.com, Artcritical.com and various gallery catalogues. His paintings have been shown regionally and locally for over thirty-five years. A Contributing Editor of The New Art Examiner from 1993 - 2001, he is a member of the International Association of Art Critics, and the College Art Association. He has developed and taught seminars in graduate programs at the University of the Arts and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts since 2000.
